Frequently Asked Questions

the Bread

Q: Which stores sell Dave's Killer Bread in my area?
A: Head over to our Store Locator to find a store near you!

Q: Why doesn't my store carry all of the varieties of Dave's Killer Bread?
A: Many stores choose to carry only a certain number of our varieties (good examples of this are Costco and WinCo), while other stores choose to carry our whole line. If you want your store to carry more varieties of DKB, fill out a comment card or speak to a manager and let them know which varieties you would like the store to carry. Most stores take customer feedback like this very seriously and your effort can help us get additional shelf space for more breads! Thanks for your support.

Q: How should I store my bread?
A: The best way to store your bread is on your counter or in a bread box at room temperature. Take care to keep your bread away from sunlight, heat, and high moisture levels, they can cause the bread to mold early. Yuck! To store bread for extended amounts of time (up to three months), put a second bag around the original bag, seal it tightly, and place it in your freezer. Thaw slices as you need them. Storing bread in the refrigerator will keep your loaf from molding; however it may also dry out your bread. We recommend freezing bread if you can't possibly eat  it all, but good luck with that.

Q: Why doesn't the bread mold?
A: The organic dried cane syrup (sugar) and organic cultured wheat are natural ways that help keep our bread from molding quickly. Also, we go to great lengths to ensure that our facility is free of any airborne contaminants that can cause mold. Finally, we strive to make sure that loaves of DKB are sold as fresh as possible off the grocery store shelf to give you the most time to enjoy it at home. We do not use any artificial or chemical preservatives.

Q: Are your products vegan?
A: All DKB bread products are considered vegan and do not contain any animal products, however, our limited edition DKB Snack Bars (Trail Mix Crumble and Oat-Rageous Honey Almond™) are NOT considered vegan as they contain organic honey.

Q: Do you make a gluten-free bread?
A: We do not currently make any gluten-free products. It's really hard to get a gluten-free bread to match our high standards for killer taste and texture (we're trying!).

Q: Are Dave's Killer Bread products Non-GMO?
A: Yes. All of our products are Non-GMO Project Verified, meaning they've been independently tested and verified to meet the Non-GMO Project's standard for GMO avoidance. This is a separate certification from USDA Organic and involves ongoing testing and traceability throughout our supply chain.

Q: What does USDA Organic mean?
A: USDA Certified Organic products are regulated and certified by the United States Department of Agriculture. To earn the USDA Organic seal, our products are made using ingredients produced without synthetic herbicides (like glyphosate) synthetic pesticides, artificial fertilizers, or GMOs. Our suppliers maintain organic certification through rigorous third-party audits, and we follow strict food safety and quality control standards at every stage of production.

Q: Is glyphosate used at any point in the production process – from ingredients to finished products? A. Absolutely NOT.

Q: Can pesticide or herbicide residues show up in organic foods? A. Organic farming prohibits synthetic pesticides and herbicides, but because these substances are widely used in conventional agriculture, very small trace amounts can occasionally show up in organic products through environmental drift, shared transportation, or background presence in soil and water. The USDA accounts for this: under the National Organic Program, organic products may contain trace residues of prohibited substances up to 5% of the EPA's safety tolerance (in parts per million) and still maintain their organic certification.

Q: Do your products contain peanuts or tree nuts?
A:  DKB bread, bagels, buns and English Muffins do not contain peanuts or tree nuts, and are not manufactured in a facility that produces products containing peanuts or tree nuts.

All DKB Snack Bars and Protein Bars contain almonds, and two Protein Bars contain peanuts. All of the DKB Snack Bars and Protein Bars are produced in facilities that may use ingredients containing almonds, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, coconut, hazelnuts and pecans.

All DKB Snack Bites contain almonds and cashews, and one flavor contains peanuts. All Snack Bites are produced in facilities that may use ingredients containing almonds, peanuts, walnuts, cashews, coconut, hazelnuts and pecans.

Please refer to the ingredient label on the product packaging for the most accurate information.

Snack Bars, Protein Bars and Snack Bites are not made in the same facility as our other DKB products.

Q: Is Dave real?
A: Yes! Dave of Dave's Killer Bread is Dave Dahl - he grew up working in his family's bakery, but his struggles with depression and addiction led him to a series of crime, where he ended up serving 15 years in prison. After receiving early release, he came back to the bakery and invented what's now Dave's Killer Bread.
